No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky is pretty much the game I had in my head when playing games like Elite and Starglider back as a kid. It’s also the first game that’s finally made the “Maybe I need to buy a PS4” switch click in my head!

There’s no release date yet, but it’ll be coming out at some point for PS4, and presumably for Xbox One and PC sometime after that!

Race the Sun and the Not On Steam Sale

Flippfly made the rounds on the gaming news after they blogged about the trials of selling their game Race the Sun when you’re not on Steam.

Rather than just hoping that Greenlight would work out for them, they’ve launched their own Not on Steam sale of indie games that aren’t (yet) available through Steam – most of them are still sat in the Greenlight queue, which is somewhat of a mixed blessing for indies.

Ironically, Steam themselves then went and greenlit a bunch more games, including Race, so hopefully things will pick up for them.

Race the Sun is a furiously addictive twich arcade game that can currently be bought for the sale price of $5 (about £3) on the sale’s page and is well worth the money. There’s also lots of other great games too – with up to 50% off each one, you can pick up a fair few bargains, and be safe in the knowledge that most of them will give you a free Steam key if they ever do make it through Greenlight.

Anyway, I’m heading back to piloting my solar powered glider, and trying not to smash into every frigging obstacle along the way!

Fist of Awesome

FIST OF AWESOME is a time-travelling-lumberjack-em-up of epic proportions. It stars Tim Burr as a man out of time, caught up in a needlessly convoluted plot to enslave humanity by populating history with homicidal wild animals. FIST OF AWESOME gleefully conjures up nostalgic memories of the likes of Final Fight, Streets of Rage, and other fondly remembered brawlers from the 1990s golden age of scrolling beat ’em ups.

I first met Nicoll Hunt (who is definitely not a girl – the beard is a dead giveaway) in an upstairs bar at a games industry social do in a London pub last year. He mentioned the little 80s inspired beatemup he’d been working on, and handed phone around for us to have a play. I later tweeted that it was indeed awesome, and hoped I’d get to play a finished version one day.

Not long later, in early November, Nicoll tweeted out of the blue that he was launching a Kickstarter so that he could leave his day job and put some serious effort into getting FIST finished and released. Of course I threw my money at him immediately (in fact I somehow ended up as backer #1.) A month later, he’d achieved 236% of his funding target and all was go.

I’ve been having a good play of the latest test build these last few days and have been having a thoroughly awesome time – the controls feel fluid and perfectly suited to a touchscreen, and the graphics and sound do a great job of harking back to the 80s whilst still feeling like a modern game.

The game is due for release on iOS, Android and Ouya on the 15th of October, and later on PC, which can be preordered at fistofawesome.com

You will also be able to admire Nicoll’s impressive beard first hand in the Indie Game Arcade at the Eurogamer Expo at the end of September.
